New appointment booking system coming soon

PLANNED APPOINTMENT SYSTEM CHANGES

During the pandemic NHS England mandated the use of telephone appointments. However, we recognize this has been difficult for some people. We have worked hard with patients to redesign our system and recruit sufficient staff to launch this on September 1st 2022. 

We hope the new system will enable us to best meet patients’ needs by considering their preference for appointment type and timings, directing them to the most appropriate person within our team, and by trying to maintain continuity with their usual GP or other team member. 

You will be able to book an appointment:

  • By using the econsult tool online (we hope to change this to a simpler online form soon)
  • By telephoning our reception team during working hours
  • In person at either practice 
  • Online: nurse, healthcare assistants, and clinical pharmacist (blood tests, injections, cervical smears, and chronic disease or medication reviews)

Our reception staff have been trained to gather some basic information to enable a doctor to assess who might best help you. We will also ask the urgency of your need, the person you would like to contact, your preferred appointment type (phone/face-to-face/email or text), when you are unavailable, and your preferred mode of contact (text/email/phone). The more information you can provide the easier this makes it for our team and the more likely we will be able to offer you a suitable and convenient appointment. 

Your request will be triaged within 24 hours by a GP. Urgent issues will be triaged and dealt with the same day. Our team will use your preferred contact method to let you know what day and time we can offer you an appointment – it is easiest if we can text you unless this is difficult. We will do our best to offer your preferred type of appointment. Appointments will be bookable 3 weeks in advance. If the time you are offered is not convenient, we ask that you ring our reception team to change it.

Scammer Alert

We have had a report from one of our patients to say that they received a call stating that their medication was due for delivery the following day and to confirm the details of the debit card to pay with. Luckily, the individual saw straight through the scammers and did not give out any personal information.

We advise you remain vigilant and never give out personal or financial information to any companies or individuals you are suspicious of. 

The number that came up on the caller ID is 020 381 53373.

Practice Update - 1 July 2022

From 1st July 2022, you will no longer be able to order your medication via the answer machine service.

Please order via Patient Access, NHS app (accessible by smartphone, tablets, PC & Laptop) or by using your repeat prescription slip and putting through the letterbox in the Surgery.

If you order on behalf of a family member , please speak to the Patient Care advisor team about proxy access.

Ongoing Staffing Problems at Lloyds Pharmacy

With ongoing staffing problems at Lloyds Pharmacy in Eynsham, we at Eynsham Medical Group (EMG) continue to do all we can to assist our patients who have elected to have their prescription sent to Lloyds.

Dealing with the consequences of the problems Lloyds are suffering does put considerable pressure on our staff with a great increase in workload for them. For this reason, Eynsham Dispensary will close its hatch to the public from 12 until 3pm for the next two weeks. From Monday 9th May until Friday 20th May. This gives the staff working in dispensary time to catch up with the backlog of work these issues have created.

While we will do all we can to mitigate the impact of these Lloyds closures, once a prescription has been sent to Lloyds Pharmacy we have limited options of how to assist our patients. If you have had a prescription request sent to Lloyds and Lloyds have not yet downloaded it from the NHS spine, they can issue you with a token that you can then take to any pharmacy to have filled.

Blandford Fly Bites

Blandford Fly bites commonly occur this time of year in Oxfordshire. Please read the below information on what to do if you are bitten.

The Blandford fly (sometimes called blackfly) is a small 2-3mm insect usually found in East Anglia, Oxfordshire and Dorset. Blandford Fly bites are most common during May & June. They often occur on the legs and can be very painful. The effects of the bites on humans range from small blisters to large (up to 22cm diameter) haemorrhagic lesions, which can produce intensely painful stabbing sensations. The saliva of the fly, which passes into the wound, often causes sever irritation, pain, swelling and blistering.

What to do if you get bitten by the Blandford Fly?

An insect bite often causes a small lump to develop, which is usually very itchy. A small hole (the actual bite) may also be visible. The lump may have an inflamed (red & swollen) area around it that may be filled with fluid; this is called the weal. Insect bites usually clear up within several hours and they can be safely treated at home.

For example, you may develop an itchy blue papule (lump) or an itchy weal (an inflamed, fluid-filled area). This may last for several days, and the severity of the reaction will depend on your level of sensitivity.

It is important to know the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction. If you or someone you know is bitten or stung by an insect and experiences a sever reaction, emergency medical treatment will be required.

Treatment for Blandford Fly Bites

  • Clean the bite wound with soap and water and dry gently
  • Creams that contain camomile lotion, steroid cream or anaesthetic can soothe the pain of a bite, as can an antihistamine tablet. Do not apply cream r ointment to broken skin and always follow the instructions on the packet. Even though it may be itch6y, try to avoid scratching the bite because you may damage the skin which may allow bacteria to get in 
  • Redness and irritation are common and should settle within a few days with these measures
  • Secondary infections are less common. If you notice red lines appearing on the skin or enlarged lymph nodes (swelling) in your armpit or groin, seek medical advice

Simple precautions like wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers will act as a deterrent to getting bitten by the Blandford Fly. Stay away from clouds of flies on riverbanks because they can bite.

COVID Exemption Certificates

We have now received guidance from the Department of Health regarding COVID exemption certificates.

In order to request a COVID exemption certificate, please email occg.emg.vaccine.enquiries@nhs.net and please state clearly which of the following exemptions apply to you.

Please do not call the surgery as you will be directed to send the above email. If it is felt a clinical discussion is needed, one of the GPs will contact you to discuss further.


Please note ONLY patients meeting one of the following criteria will be eligible for a COVID exemption certificate:

  • Receiving end of life care where vaccination is not in the individual’s interests. 
  • With learning disabilities or autistic individuals, or with a combination of impairments which result in the same distress, who find vaccination and testing distressing because of their condition and cannot be achieved through reasonable adjustments such as provision of an accessible environment. 
  • Those with medical contraindications to the vaccines such as: 
  • severe allergy to all Covid-19 vaccines or their constituents (e.g. PEG). 
  • those who have had adverse reactions to the first dose (e.g. myocarditis). 

We can consider time-limited exemptions in the following case only:

Short term medical conditions: Some individuals may apply for an exemption on the grounds that they have a time-limited medical reason for deferring vaccination (e.g. they are receiving hospital care or receiving medication which may interact with vaccination). 

Pregnant women - The following advice applies specifically to pregnant women:

  • JCVI has therefore advised that women who are pregnant should be offered vaccination at the same time as non-pregnant women, based on their age and clinical risk group. 
  • Whilst clinicians should continue to clearly recommend the vaccine for pregnant women (at any gestation), the option of a time-limited exemption to pregnant women who express concerns surrounding the vaccine after counselling can be considered. 
  • There are fewer concerns surrounding the safety of the vaccine and breastfeeding so these women would not be considered exempt unless there are alternative indications for exemption. 
  • Those who are trying to get pregnant are not eligible for an exemption. 
  • We recommend the expiry date for an exemption for pregnant women should be 16 weeks post-partum, in order to allow them to acquire two doses of the vaccine after birth (plus two weeks).

Covid Vaccine/Booster Clinics

  • We are running our next covid vaccine/booster clinics at our Long Hanborough Surgery on Fridays between 08:30-13:00 until further notice. These clinics are by appointment only.

How to book?

Bookings can only be made online and we ask that you do not call reception to book in.

Who can attend?

Due to sickness and isolation, we have very few Patient Care Advisors (PCA) to staff reception at the moment. Therefore, at various times throughout this week, the reception desk at either site will not have a staff member to help you.

If you need to contact a PCA please do so by phone. 

If you have an appointment with a nurse or Health Care Assistant please use the self-check in screen available in the waiting room.

If you have a face-to-face appointment with a doctor please take a seat in the waiting room and someone will come to collect you.

National Institute of Health Research and Royal College of General Practitioners practice research award

Eynsham Medical Group has been nationally acclaimed at the Royal College of General Practitioners conference by being awarded the annual  National Institute of Health Research and Royal College of General Practitioners practice research award. 

A joint application was entered with the Windrush Medical Practice in Witney for the research work that the two practices have worked on collaboratively. In the last year, the research work has primarily been on Covid-19 treatments and vaccine studies, but the practices do get involved in a wide range of research. Dr. Ian Binnian, as GP lead on research at Eynsham, received the award jointly with Dr. Nick Thomas from the Windrush Medical Practice. 

The practices employ practice nurses, a research manager and research assistants to specially work on these studies. The practices are very grateful to our patient population who become involved in these studies, and help drive forward the research work which can then translate into future medical treatments and health policies in the UK and globally.

Infection Prevention Risk Assessment - updated 27/10/2021

RISK ASSESSMENT

The infection control team has completed a risk assessment of the 'updated UK health security agency advice. 

At present Covid infection rates are at a very high level.  This is resulting in increased hospital admissions, long term health problems (Long Covid). 

Staff being off sick and isolating due to Covid has a huge negative effect on our ability to maintain our patient services.

We need to protect our often vulnerable patients but this also applies to all patients and ensures they feel safe to attend the surgery if needed.

Considering all of this we have concluded that we will maintain our current social distancing measures of 2 meters between people and not 1 meter as advised in the new guidance.  We will continue to adhere to the other measures laid out in the guidance.
